Garrett Opportunities - Municipal Government
Garrett is an incorporated, third-class Indiana city. Elected officials serve a four-year term, and include a Mayor, Clerk-Treasurer and five Common Council members. Municipal elections are held quadrennially the year prior to a presidential election year. The terms of the current office holders expire December 31, 2011.

The Garrett Fire Department operates out of a 6-bay facility, located at 200 North Cowen Street. It has recently acquired a new fire truck to enhance its firefighting capabilities. Its fire insurance rating was also recently upgraded to "Class 5."

Tax abatement for the construction and/or expansion of industrial buildings (up to 10 years), and for the acquisition of manufacturing equipment (up to 10 years) may be granted by the Garrett Common Council according to the policies and criteria established by the Indiana Code and the City of Garrett Tax Abatement Policy. The City contracts with a private sanitation hauler to pick-up solid waste from 1,850 households per week.
Garrett operates a drive-through recycling center, which is open three days per week.
